Plan your trek into Sri Lanka’s rugged Knuckles Mountain Range. Explore Riverston, Mini World’s End, the remote village of Meemure, and essential safety tips.
Known locally as Dumbara Kanduvetiya (the Mist-Laden Hills), the Knuckles Mountain Range is one of Sri Lanka’s most pristine and rugged wilderness regions. Rising across the Kandy and Matale districts, this UNESCO World Heritage mountain reserve features 34 individual peaks rising above 1,000 meters, creating a diverse landscape of distinct microclimates, cloud forests, and remote mountain communities.
For breathtaking mountain vistas, head to the northern sector of the range near Riverston. The trek toward Mini World’s End leads along exposed, windswept ridge lines covered in wild highland grasses, pygmy forests, and bright red rhododendrons.
Reaching the edge rewards you with an abrupt, 1,000-meter vertical drop down sheer stone faces into the Thelgamuwa River valley below. Strong thermal updrafts sweep up the cliff face, carrying mountain hawk-eagles soaring right past the precipice. On clear days, the view stretches across emerald wilderness toward the central plains.
Tucked deep within a protected valley beneath the iconic pyramid summit of Lakegala lies Meemure, one of the most isolated traditional villages on the island.
Accessible only by rugged 4WD tracks or cross-country hiking paths, Meemure preserves sustainable mountain farming traditions that have thrived for centuries. Terraced paddy fields run down the valley sides, fed by cold, crystalline mountain springs. Visiting Meemure offers a rare glimpse into rural highland hospitality, where residents welcome hikers with boiled manioc (cassava), freshly grated coconut, and pure kithul jaggery.
Always Trek with a Local Tracker: Never hike in the Knuckles without a certified local guide. Heavy cloud cover and torrential rain can roll across the ridges within minutes, instantly hiding visual markers. Trails are completely unmarked and crisscross confusing animal paths.
Managing Forest Leeches: The moist soil of the montane cloud forests is home to small forest leeches, especially after seasonal rains. Wear knee-high leech socks, tuck your trousers firmly into your boots, and carry a small spray bottle filled with saltwater, lemon juice, or diluted Dettol to easily detach them.
Waterfall Swims: Bring swimwear and a quick-dry towel. Cool off after your hike with a swim in the deep, clear natural plunge pools at the base of Sera Ella Waterfall, where a concealed rock cave allows you to step directly behind the falling curtain of water.
